Livin' on Mecca time

Muslim call to adopt Mecca time
By Magdi Abdelhadi
BBC Arab affairs analyst

Muslim scientists and clerics have called for the adoption of Mecca time to replace GMT, arguing that the Saudi city is the true centre of the Earth.

Mecca is the direction all Muslims face when they perform their daily prayers.

The call was issued at a conference held in the Gulf state of Qatar under the title: Mecca, the Centre of the Earth, Theory and Practice.

One geologist argued that unlike other longitudes, Mecca's was in perfect alignment to magnetic north.

That last claim is pretty interesting, since the position of the north magnetic pole moves over time.

Absurd, yes, but no more so than “Christian scientists” calling for creationism.

You're right about that, Butch. But if we started to catalog the scientific absurdities of religious leaders, we'd need a lot more space than I have here.

And, lest you think I'm picking on Muslims, check out the comments for this post and this one. Everybody's fair game.

Thanks for the comment.
