Something only a lawyer would say (II)
Ex-clients sue lawyer over diet drug settlementA local plaintiff lawyer was so incensed about the lower financial rewards from lawsuits involving a diet drug that he improperly saddled his clients with $23 million in unjustified costs to increase his bottom line, former clients claim in a lawsuit that went to trial Wednesday in state district court.
Ten former clients of George Fleming, each of whom received payments in a mass settlement over the Fen-Phen diet drug with pharmaceutical giant Wyeth in 2006, filed the lawsuit. [...]
An ex-associate at Fleming's law firm testified that Fleming was unhappy that so much effort had netted the lawyers only $41 million in fees after expenses.
"He said he had worked too long and too hard for a lousy $41 million," said Jim Doyle, who left the firm after objecting to Fleming's unusual decision to include non-client expenses among those billed to clients.
