Cool billboard
One of the coolest advertisements we've seen lately is for Berger Paints. In a billboard for their campaign titled, Natural Colours, a live painter appeared to be painting the blue of the sky onto the billboard. It was achieved by cutting out strips that are the actual shape and size of the roller strokes. This is stop-in-your-tracks advertising. Love it!

Russian Wall-E Case Mod (110 pics)
This project took 18 days from this Russian guy to accomplish. It all has began after he has watched that cartoon. An idea sparked thru his head "I want to build such thing to hold my computer stuff in it". A solid-metal Wall-E computer case, each detail carefully cut from the metal sheets processed and put in place.

Judging from the photos, the man machined all the parts used in this case from aluminum plate.

B1509
A Young Pulsar Shows Its HandA small, dense object only twelve miles in diameter is responsible for this beautiful X-ray nebula that spans 150 light years. At the center of this image made by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory is a very young and powerful pulsar, known as PSR B1509-58, or B1509 for short. The pulsar is a rapidly spinning neutron star which is spewing energy out into the space around it to create complex and intriguing structures, including one that resembles a large cosmic hand.
In this image, the lowest energy X-rays that Chandra detects are red, the medium range is green, and the most energetic ones are colored blue. Astronomers think that B1509 is about 1,700 years old and is located about 17,000 light years away.

And then there was this, the Flyer, which is no more than a motorized park bench on bicycle wheels. No suspension, no bodywork, no windshield. It was actually a five wheeler, with the dinky 2-hp Briggs and Stratton engine driving a traction wheel on the back, like a boat's outboard motor.

His lucky day (II)
Bill sends a couple of pix of a one-car accident out west with the subject line: Wow!
In this picture you can see where this driver broke through the guard rail on the right side of the culvert (where the people are standing on the road, pointing).

The pick-up was traveling about 75 MPH, from right to left when it crashed through the guard rail. It flipped end-over-end, bounced off and across the culvert, and landed right-side-up on the left side of the culvert facing opposite to the original direction of travel.
The 22-year-old driver and his 18-year-old passenger were unhurt except for minor cuts and bruises.
Now look at a second picture (after the break).

NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day for November 20th.

Glaring near the top of the frame, the shuttle orbiter Endeavour rockets into the night on the STS-126 mission. [...] To record the dramatic view, the camera was placed so the shuttle's flight path tracked across the Moon, from a vantage point in Indian River City, Florida.

Tattoos on scientists
Carl Zimmer has collected ~175 science tattoos at The Loom, a blog at Discover Magazine's site.

This was one of my favorites. But it has a sad story associated with it.
In April, a reader named Abigail sent in this tattoo, with the following description:
My first year of college, I wanted to be an English major, and I took Intro Chemistry to fill the science requirement. The brief unit on thermodynamics made me fall totally in love. Entropy made sense to me - scientifically, philosophically. I became a Chemistry major and love every second of it. I got the tattoo to mark my rite of passage - Entropy going both ways, with its symble delta-S in the middle, all supported in the roots of Yggdrasil, the world-tree of Norse mythology (harking back to my English-lit days).
Today, Abigail's mother sent in this sad note:
Abigail is my daughter. I was with her when she got this tattoo last March, several months after she turned 18, while she was attending Reed College in Portland. It was an adventure for both of us. She came home for the summer in May, and four days later was in a fatal car accident.I will be getting this same tattoo next week - Abigail's personal design - from the same artist. It will memorialize both my daughter and her intellect and passion for science and philosophy.
The world has lost an incredible mind. Thank you Mr. Zimmer for displaying this artwork and sharing it with visitors to this site.

Core memory
Core Memory is a nice collection of photos by Mark Richards. I believe they come from his book Core Memory: A Visual Survey of Vintage Computers.

When I first got into this business in 1981, one of the machines I worked with was a Modcomp Classic. It came new with 512 KB of RAM (twice the RAM of the previous model) and a fast 16-bit CPU that was four RCA 4-bit processors in parallel. It had a front panel somewhat similar to the one above. (I could tell you about the old discrete-component, drum memory GE computer the Modcomp replaced but I don't want to tax your patience too much.)
To start one of these machines, you entered a simple program (a dozen instructions, say) into memory using the toggle switches on the front panel. Then you started that program running.
The program you toggled in would read the bootstrap loader, stored in ROM, into memory and start that. In turn, the loader would go looking for a boot device - a tape, a hard disk or even a card reader - and load the operating system into memory. As you can guess, this was a fairly slow process. A boot from disk that went quickly probably took about 5 minutes. If you used a tape drive (or a card reader) it took even longer.
We kept the boot instruction sequence written in machine language (hexadecimal) on the backs of punch cards on the inside of the cabinet doors. Those were the days, my friend.

Lake Shore Drive
Here's another great shot of Chicago at night. Andrew Roth writes at the Club for Growth blog, "If Al Gore saw this picture, he would probably let out a frustrated moan. When I saw it, I said, 'God bless capitalism.'"

And when I saw it, I was reminded of this old song about Lake Shore Drive.

Nighttime in Flagstaff
This nice view of the Milky Way was the Astronomy Picture of the Day for April 16th.
This sky is protected. Yesterday marked the 50 year anniversary of the first lighting ordinance ever enacted, which restricted searchlight advertisements from sweeping the night skies above Flagstaff, Arizona, USA. Flagstaff now enjoys the status of being the first International Dark Sky City, and maintains a lighting code that limits lights from polluting this majestic nighttime view.

Maglev chair
A UK designer is about to take the wraps off a unique floating chair/recliner called The Lounger, inspired by the Landspeeder from Star Wars.[...] the futuristic looking Lounger has taken 5 years to create and allows you to float above the base thanks to the use of repelling magnetic forces in the base and the lounger itself.
We are not talking a few centimetres off the base either but up to 14ins so that you get that whole ‘floating sensation’. That of course depends on how much you weigh. If you’re close to the 266lbs [19 stone] limit then maybe you should drop that to 4ins or less.

Pro-Hillary
In the "Why settle for less?" sense. From Perry de Havilland at Samizdata (where I lifted the image, too):
Although I am rarely in enthusiastic agreement with Ann Coulter, I agree with her basic premiss [sic] regarding John McCain. Better to have the statist poison introduced by the Hildebeeste or Obrama than a Republican, because if McCain gets into the White House, that is the end of the Republican Party as anyone in the Goldwater or Reagan tradition will abandon them, quite possibly forever. The Republicans will be dead and gawd knows it will be a well deserved death.

Looking back over the past year, the editors of the Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) have decided to list 12 of the more memorable images posted to APOD in 2007. There was certainly no shortage of breathtaking images to choose from -- with robotic cameras orbiting Mars and rolling around its surface, the Cassini spacecraft at Saturn, space telescopes exploring the cosmos, and ground-based imaging with increasingly sophisticated hardware and software.

GigaPan
A site filled with panoramas, both exterior and interior. Here's part of a panorama of Pittsburgh.

GigaPan consists of three technological developments: a robotic camera mount for capturing very high-resolution (gigapixel and up) panoramic images using a standard digital camera; custom software for constructing very high-resolution gigapixel panoramas; and, a new type of website for exploring, sharing and commenting on gigapixel panoramas and the detail our users will discover within them. The GigaPan website allows hosting and sharing all kinds of panoramas, and so the robotic GigaPan mount is recommended but is certainly not required to be part of this community.[...]
The GigaPan team is both diverse and large. Here we recognize the institutions that comprise our core team.
* Carnegie Mellon University
* NASA/Ames Research Center
* Google Corporation - Financial support for the Global Connection Project
* Charmed Labs LLC - GigaPan robot design and production
* DeepLocal, Inc. - Website design and production
