"With all the news lately about the subzero weather and snow that the Midwest and East Coast areas are experiencing, we shouldn't forget that Tucson has also had its share of devastating weather in the last couple of weeks.
Below is a photo showing damage to a home from a recent storm that passed through the Tucson area. It really makes you cherish what you have and reminds us not to take life for granted. "

Awesome dunes of Mars

Another dose of Martian awesomeThat is not a closeup of my chin before I shave. It's Mars, a dune field in the far north; at latitude 83.5° to be precise, less than 400 km (240 miles) from the north pole. The eternal Martian wind blows the heavy sand into dunes, and you can see the hummocks and ripples from this across the image. The sand on Mars is from basalt, which is a darkish gray color. The red comes from much smaller dust particles which settle everywhere.
But what are those weird tendril thingies?

Carpe Diem picks up an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education:
From the Chronicle of Higher Education:Given that he holds a named chair "for the study of capitalism" [BB&T Professor for the Study of Capitalism at George Mason University] it is perhaps not that surprising that Pete Leeson was a keen economist even as a teenager. When he was 17, he had supply-and-demand curves tattooed on his right biceps. "People think it's fun and that I'm an oddball for having it," says Mr. Leeson. "One of my favorite things about it is the chance it gives me to talk to total strangers about economics." That, he admits, might confirm his "dorkdom," but so be it.

Analemma
This was the Astronomy Picture of the Day for December 20th. It reminded me of Neal Stephenson's Anathem.

If you went outside at exactly the same time every day and took a picture that included the Sun, how would the Sun appear to move? With great planning and effort, such a series of images can be taken. The figure-8 path the Sun follows over the course of a year is called an analemma. This coming Tuesday, the Winter Solstice day in Earth's northern hemisphere, the Sun will be at the bottom of the analemma. [...] With even greater planning and effort, the series can include a total eclipse of the Sun as one of the images. Pictured is such a total solar eclipse analemma or Tutulemma - a term coined by the photographers based on the Turkish word for eclipse. The composite image sequence was recorded from Turkey starting in 2005. The base image for the sequence is from the total phase of a solar eclipse as viewed from Side, Turkey on 2006 March 29.Credit & Copyright: Cenk E. Tezel and Tunç Tezel (TWAN)

Best Christmas decoration ever?
Rob sends this picture of The Best Christmas Decoration Ever.

Here is the story that went along with it.
Good news is that I truly out did myself this year with my Christmas decorations. The bad news is that I had to take him down after two days. I had more people come screaming up to my house than ever. Great stories. But two things made me take it down.First, the cops advised me that it would cause traffic accidents as they almost wrecked when they drove by.
Second, a 55 year old lady grabbed the 75 pound ladder almost killed herself putting it against my house and didn’t realize that it was fake until she climbed to the top (she was not happy). By the way, she was one of the many people who attempted to do that. My yard couldn’t take it either. I have more than a few tire tracks where people literally drove up my yard.

Unseen Sahara
National Geographic has a nice slideshow of the work of George Steinmetz in the Sahara.

But what really piqued my interest was how Mr. Steinmetz gets his aerial photos. He flies the most minimal powered 'chute rig I've ever read about. Here's a description from his site. (My emphasis.)
Most of the aerial photos you see on this website were taken from the seat of the lightest powered aircraft in the world, a motorized paraglider. The aircraft consists of three components: the “wing” of a paraglider (similar to an aerobatic parachute), a back-pack mounted motor, and a single-seat harness that ties the three pieces together. It is launched by laying the paraglider out on the ground behind me like a kite, and with the motor idling I run forward, inflating the cells of the glider as it rises overhead.Check out the photos at his site. Here he's pictured taking off. You can all of his craft in this photo (aside from the ends of the chute).

When I stopped for gasoline this week, this vehicle from Wisconsin was parked next to mine. Someone had turned his Volvo sedan into a Ranchero-like vehicle for hauling toys.

Living bridges
An interesting photo essay (with video) about bridges in India made from living tree roots.
The living bridges of Cherrapunji, India are made from the roots of the Ficus elastica tree. This tree produces a series of secondary roots from higher up its trunk and can comfortably perch atop huge boulders along the riverbanks, or even in the middle of the rivers themselves.

New bridge at Hoover Dam
Tucson John sends this picture of the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. It's a little out of date: the concrete arches are now touching, according to this article.

Taking shape, the new bridge at the Hoover DamCreeping closer inch by inch – 900ft above the mighty Colorado River – the two sides of a £160million bridge at the Hoover Dam in America slowly take shape. [...]
The arches are made up of 53 individual sections – each 24ft long – which have been cast on-site and are being lifted into place using an improvised high-wire crane strung between temporary steel pylons.
The arches will eventually measure more than 1,000ft across. At the moment, the structure looks like a traditional suspension bridge. But once the arches are complete, the suspending cables on each side will be removed.

Impact!

Jupiter Adds a FeatureMauna Kea, Hawai'i—Jupiter's got a brand new mark. Something slammed into the gas giant leaving a dark bruise in the planet's atmosphere, scientists at Keck Observatory confirmed early on the morning of July 20 Hawaiian Standard Time.
The observation, made with the Keck II telescope, marks only the second time astronomers have seen such an impact on the planet. The first collision occurred 15 years ago, when more than 20 fragments of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 (SL9) collided with Jupiter.

B1509
A Young Pulsar Shows Its HandA small, dense object only twelve miles in diameter is responsible for this beautiful X-ray nebula that spans 150 light years. At the center of this image made by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory is a very young and powerful pulsar, known as PSR B1509-58, or B1509 for short. The pulsar is a rapidly spinning neutron star which is spewing energy out into the space around it to create complex and intriguing structures, including one that resembles a large cosmic hand.
In this image, the lowest energy X-rays that Chandra detects are red, the medium range is green, and the most energetic ones are colored blue. Astronomers think that B1509 is about 1,700 years old and is located about 17,000 light years away.

The 50 Worst
Since the Ford Edsel is marking its 50th anniversary, TIME has a slideshow of the 50 Worst Cars of All Time. The prose is entertaining as well as the images. (Who knew Briggs & Stratton ever sold a car?)
And then there was this, the Flyer, which is no more than a motorized park bench on bicycle wheels. No suspension, no bodywork, no windshield. It was actually a five wheeler, with the dinky 2-hp Briggs and Stratton engine driving a traction wheel on the back, like a boat's outboard motor.

2008 in photos - Part 3
Part 3 of 3 in The Big Picture's photos for the year (40 pix).
This sequence of 12 frames was taken by NASA's Cassini spacecraft over a span of about 45 minutes on March 12, 2008. In that brief time, Cassini covered almost 40,000 kilometers in its approach to a flyby encounter with Enceladus, one of the moons of Saturn.

His lucky day (II)
Bill sends a couple of pix of a one-car accident out west with the subject line: Wow!
In this picture you can see where this driver broke through the guard rail on the right side of the culvert (where the people are standing on the road, pointing).

The pick-up was traveling about 75 MPH, from right to left when it crashed through the guard rail. It flipped end-over-end, bounced off and across the culvert, and landed right-side-up on the left side of the culvert facing opposite to the original direction of travel.
The 22-year-old driver and his 18-year-old passenger were unhurt except for minor cuts and bruises.
Now look at a second picture (after the break).

Tattoos on scientists
Carl Zimmer has collected ~175 science tattoos at The Loom, a blog at Discover Magazine's site.

This was one of my favorites. But it has a sad story associated with it.
In April, a reader named Abigail sent in this tattoo, with the following description:
My first year of college, I wanted to be an English major, and I took Intro Chemistry to fill the science requirement. The brief unit on thermodynamics made me fall totally in love. Entropy made sense to me - scientifically, philosophically. I became a Chemistry major and love every second of it. I got the tattoo to mark my rite of passage - Entropy going both ways, with its symble delta-S in the middle, all supported in the roots of Yggdrasil, the world-tree of Norse mythology (harking back to my English-lit days).
Today, Abigail's mother sent in this sad note:
Abigail is my daughter. I was with her when she got this tattoo last March, several months after she turned 18, while she was attending Reed College in Portland. It was an adventure for both of us. She came home for the summer in May, and four days later was in a fatal car accident.I will be getting this same tattoo next week - Abigail's personal design - from the same artist. It will memorialize both my daughter and her intellect and passion for science and philosophy.
The world has lost an incredible mind. Thank you Mr. Zimmer for displaying this artwork and sharing it with visitors to this site.
