Behind the scenes at Puppy Bowl VIII
I'm so out of the TV loop that I'd never heard of Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl, which is airing for its 8th time tomorrow.
Here are some pix from the production of it. If you like puppies, it's like smoking a rock of cute.

A gunman identified as Michael Gonzales aims his pistol at local village politician Reynaldo Dagsa shortly before Gonzales pulled the trigger, assassinating Dagsa in Manila, Philippines, on January 5, 2011. Reynaldo Dagsa took this picture of his family on New Year's eve, moments before he was killed by Gonzales, who was captured on his camera together with an accomplice (man on the right). Police said they arrested both men charged in the assassination. (Reuters/Dagsa Family)

It's a record (3)
Well, this didn't take long... I posted an image of the previous record-holder last week. Who knew street chalk was so competitive?

3D Joe and Max x Reebok – World's Largest 3D Street ArtworkYesterday in London's West India Quays, Canary Wharf, on Guinness World Records Day, Reebok CrossFit has teamed up London-based street art duo 3D Joe and Max to complete what will go down as the world's largest and longest 3D street artwork ever (for now). The deceptively realistic piece measures 1,160.4 metres square and is 106.5m long, beating the previous 892.15metre square record set by China's Qi Xinghua, and will remain on display for the rest of today. It's a record (2)
Chinese 3D artist Qi Xinghua's huge 3D painting, which is called 'Lions Gate Gorge', has set a new Guinness World Record as the world's largest 3D painting. His breathtaking artwork, created in a square in front of a shopping mall in Guangzhou Baiyan Wanda Plaza in Guangzhou, China, measures a staggering 23m wide and 32m long on the ground, while the wall it utilises is more than 6m high. It took him a month of painstaking work to complete.

Don't forget to duck

A driver survived having his car skewered by hundreds of steel bars in Taizhou, eastern China's Zhejiang Province. Yang Junsheng, 24, was driving at around 60km/h when he smashed into a truck carrying a full load of steel bars. At the moment of impact the bars shot backward, smashing through Yang's window screen. He says: "My mind was very clear at that second, and I immediately leaned down to the passenger seat When the car stopped I found the bars had filled in the space above me and the door at my side was poked open by the bars. The closest bar was only a few centimetres away." Yang escaped the incident with just a few scratches to his face.

What your groceries say about you
This is 1 of 6.

What Your Groceries Say About YouWhenever I'm in the grocery store, I always tend to look at someone's cart and then immediately make a judgement about that person based on the contents of it. I think Webster's dictionary defines that as "Being an judgmental asshole," but so be it. Anyway, after one such trips to the grocery store I went home and fired up the ole' photoshop machine and did this.

Not surprisingly, the results look like satellite photos of city lights - except they're not.

Zeppelin Eureka
Bernard Zee writes: I'm still giddy over having had the opportunity to ride in, and photograph the only Zeppelin in the United States. The 'Eureka' is one of a new breed of lighter than air ships manufactured by the Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH, and operated by Airship Ventures. Based out of Moffett Field (in Mountain View, CA), the Eureka offers sight-seeing rides of the Bay Area and Monterey.

400 pounds per megabyte
And I hate to think how many dollars per megabyte. From Old Picture of the Day:

Today's picture is from 1956, and shows an IBM hard drive. This unit would be used to store information, not unlike your memory stick, thumb drive, or camera memory card. The hard drive pictured weighed over 1 ton, and was capable of storing 5 Mb or data. For comparison, it would take over 1,000 of these units to store the information held in a modern thumb drive.

An interesting photo-essay at Foreign Policy about military dogs.

Dogs usually jump in tandem with their trainers, but when properly outfitted with flotation vests they can make short jumps into water on their own. Yippie-ki-yay
...in the Rhone valley of Switzerland. This is from a collection of photos by Yann Gross, who documented his trip to Horizonville.

By the means of a trip by motorbike in the Rhône Valley, the pictures are about the American dream. The myth we know through the medias and the movies. Most of the people I photographed haven’t ever been in the United State of America. They feel a sense of belonging to another culture that they don’t really know. Far from the Swiss stereotypes, the confusion of symbols and the lifestyle of the people take us in a strange atmosphere, a dreamed reality that doesn’t exist in facts.

Vintage aerial photos
Eduard Spelterini: Pioneer Balloonist PhotographerEduard Spelterini (1852-1931) received his license as a balloonist from the Academie d'Aerostation in Paris, 1877, where he lived a restless and glamourous life for a number of years. He began to photograph from his balloon in 1893 as a self-taught photographer and in the following thirty years put together a remarkable body of work.

"Tilt-shifted" Van Gogh
Van Gogh's Paintings Get Tilt-Shifted (12 pics)After seeing how tilt-shift photography could make real world scenes appear like miniature models, Serena Malyon, a third-year art student, decided to simulate the effect on Van Gogh's famous paintings. Using Photoshop, she manipulated the light and adjusted the focus to make us see these paintings in ways we could have never imagined.
Amazingly, nothing in these paintings was changed, added or removed. The incredible illusions are all created by the magic of Photoshop.

Nokopo joey
Here's a double-barreled dose of cute: two tree kangaroos in one picture, courtesy of the Post-Dispatch.
Baby kangaroo joey peeks out of mother's pouch at St. Louis ZooST. LOUIS -- She was born the size of a lima bean six months ago.
Now the little kangaroo joey is about the size of a small cat -- and starting to make herself a little more visible at the St. Louis Zoo.
The Zoo issued a press release Friday to gush about Nokopo, a female Matschie's tree kangaroo joey.
Nokopo, or "Noko" for short, has begun poking her head out from within her mother's pouch at the Emerson Children's Zoo at the Saint Louis Zoo.

This is a forwarded email [...] that says big horn sheep were photographed walking across the steep wall of the Buffalo Bill Dam in Cody, Wyoming. The Truth:
The photos are real but were not taken at the Buffalo Bill Dam, according to a spokesperson at the Buffalo Bill Dam & Visitor Center, which is located about 6 miles west of Cody, Wyoming. She also told TruthOrFiction.Com that the location of the dam in the picture was in Italy and the animals in the photo were identified as ibex, not big horn sheep. These were actually photos of Alpine Ibex taken at the Lake Cingino Dam in the Italian Alps by Maurizio Piazzai, who posted them on the Internet.
