I saw Steve Fugate on the side of the road in the Californian desert the day after Christmas. In 1999, lost his son to suicide. A few years later he lost his daughter to a drug overdose. At sixty-four years old, he has walked across the United States seven times to raise awareness for depression and suicide and to inspire people he meets to "love life." Prior to his departure, Steve ran a couple of successful car detailing businesses in Vero Beach, Florida. After fourteen years and 34,000 miles of walking, Steve continues his quest to heal his heart and the hearts of those in need.

Huelux

I shot Huelux from April-November 2013 in South Dakota, Wyoming and Utah. The weather in 2013 made it difficult for me to get some of the shots I wanted. There were many times I planned to shoot the Milky Way or Aurora, and the clouds would roll in. But that also allowed me to get more night storm timelapse than I have any other year.

One-of-a-kind Super Bowl ad

This aired locally in Savannah

An epic 2 Minute Halftime Commercial written and directed by Jamie Casino. The spot features Jamie's brother Michael who was gunned down with his friend on Labor Day 2012. The story reveals how Savannah's Chief of Police, Willie Lovett, deceived the citizens of Savannah after four homicides took place Labor Day weekend. Jamie Casino, a personal injury attorney with a large practice based in Savannah, GA created the ad to set the record straight in the Biggest Game of the Year, Super Bowl XLVIII.

K'nex machine

This is a short teaser for my latest construction project, the world's largest K'nex ball machine, at The Works Museum in Bloomington, Minnesota. http://theworks.org/

The machine stands 23.5 feet tall and 40 feet long, and contains over 100,000 pieces. It has 2 lifts, 3 motors, and 8 paths, including a 20 foot free-fall, an 8 foot tall big-ball-factory spiral, and a 60 foot long path which hangs from the ceiling. It takes 3 and a half minutes for a ball to climb to the top of the tallest tower.

Mean Mower

So much for the John Deere

Honda Fast Lawn Mower Goes Zero To Sixty In Four Seconds

A Honda fast lawn mower with the ability to top 100 mph has been designed for people who like to cut their lawn but don't want to spend more than a few seconds doing it.

The supercharged grass-cutting machine was announced by Honda UK and Team Dynamics. Dubbed the Mean Mower, the Honda fast lawn mower can chug along at 15 mph for people who want to use the vehicle for its intended purpose, but it can also top off at close to 130 mph for those with a racing spirit.

The Mean Mower got it start as a different model, the Honda HF2620 Lawn Tractor, but then developers replaced the 20 hp motor with a supercharged, 1,000 cc V-twin that actually comes from the Honda VTR1000 Firestorm sport. The lawn mower also got the bike's six-speed transmission and a stronger suspension to handle a set of ATV wheels and tires. The developers threw in a Cobra racing seat for good measure.

In all the lawn mower can go zero to 60 mph in about four seconds.

F'real (3)

I knew the comics-to-movies trend was a bad idea.

YouTube notes:

The popular comedy manga "Kyukyoku!! Hentai Kamen" (Ultimate!! Pervert Mask), which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump in the 1990s, has been adapted into a live-action film. The plans for the film were originally proposed by the actor Oguri Shun. "Kyukyoku!! Hentai Kamen" is a gag manga all about a character who, by wearing panties on his head and taking off his clothes, transforms into Hentai Kamen to fight crime. The movie "HK: Hentai Kamen" will be released on April 13, 2013.

Alchemy

For your delectation (assuming you like nature photography).

Alchemy is a short film about transformation. In nature, everything is constantly changing: the earth, the sky, the stars, and all living things. Spring is followed by summer, fall and winter. Water turns into clouds, rain and ice. Over time, rivers are created, canyons carved, and mountains formed. All of these elements, mixed together, create the magic of nature's alchemy.

Mataerial

Several things struck me about this clip. First, the grace of the robot's motion: it's so smooth and sure, like an automated Slow Hand.

Second, it's amazing how quickly this material sets. I assume the objects beside the extrusion tip are blowing warm air to make it set faster.

And finally, while it's probably not what the inventors had in mind, this looks like a great way to apply caulk.

MATAERIAL is the result of the collaborative research between Petr Novikov, Saša Jokić from the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) and Joris Laarman Studio. IAAC tutors representing Open Thesis Fabrication Program provided their advice and professional expertise. During the course of the research we developed a brand new digital fabrication method and a working prototype that can open a door to a number of practical applications.

'We' refers to the Sydney Symphony. This is still playing at the Sydney Opera House, apparently.

And Happy Birthday, btw.

2/2/13- I was up for a birthday flight with my wife (her first flight ever), her mother and my seven month old boy when we received the shocking news that our carburator had iced over. After gliding over some field we found an ideal place to land the plane. The pilot was experienced in field landings but unfortunately the snow caused the landing gear to sever from the plane, flipping the plane front to back and smashing the tail before it came to a rest upside down. No one was hurt in the accident save for bruises, whiplash and minor cuts.

Happy Eggs' Pancake-omatic

Happy eggs has linked up with a team of designers to create a Wallace & Gromit-style device that makes pancakes from eggs laid just minutes before. The cracking contraption takes its cue from a free range hen laying an egg to set in motion a chain reaction that makes the world's freshest pancake.

The Pancake-omatic took a team of four design engineers more than 200 hours to construct and a further 100 to test.

More of a rush than he expected, I'll guess

BASE jump stunt in Norway goes horribly wrong

BASE jumper Richard Henriksen was performing the stunt for a TV show on the NRK TV network in Norway.

Video footage of the accident shows Henriksen making his first rotation around the metal bar when it suddenly collapses.

The father-of-five then flies off the cliff head-first, and those watching can be heard letting out a huge gasp.

In an extremely lucky chain of events, Henriksen survived the 1200m fall. He narrowly missed falling against the rock face of the cliff and managed to open his parachute on the way down, NRK TV reports.

A complete overhaul

Here's a nicely done timelapse of overhauling a auto engine. It reminds me of the time I tore down the engine in my old Volvo wagon after it hammered a valve through one of its pistons.

There's nothing like starting it up and driving off after an overhaul (even if you do have a few odds & ends left over).

Orvillecopter

A little macabre for my taste.

It's a tribute to the cat Orville, that was named after the famous aviator Orville Wright. After the cat was killed by a car, and followed by a period of mourning, visual artist Bart Jansen transformed him into the Orvillecopter: Now he is finally flying with the birds. The greatest goal a cat could ever reach!

Phoenix

This building is scheduled to be 'topped out' next month.

Time-Lapse Video Shows One World Trade Construction; Tower Could Surpass Empire State Building in Height

In a matter of days, One World Trade Center could be the tallest building in Manhattan and one of the tallest in the world.

The building is expected to be taller than New York’s iconic Empire State Building, which currently rises 1,250 feet to the 102nd floor observation deck. [...]

The progression of construction on One World Trade can be seen in a two-minute, time-lapse video from EarthCam, the international webcam technology company.

Construction is estimated to be finished in 2013 or 2014. One World Trade Center will stand 1,776 feet tall.
