The Huge Mistake

A couple of EPA lawyers describe why Cap & Trade legislation is a really bad way to reduce carbon emissions. Remember the Law of Unintended Consequences.

They're right that a "carbon fee" is a better approach to reducing carbon emissions (though they should just bite the bullet and call it a carbon tax).

And for AGW skeptics like me, the tax approach has another advantage -- you can always repeal a tax when you figure out it was a mistake. Getting rid of a cap & trade program will be much more difficult.

A little something for nothing

"Putpockets" give a little extra cash

LONDON (Reuters) – Visitors to London always have to be on the look out for pickpockets, but now there's another, more positive phenomenon on the loose -- putpockets.

Aware that people are suffering in the economic crisis, 20 former pickpockets have turned over a new leaf and are now trawling London's tourist sites slipping money back into unsuspecting pockets.

Anything from 5 pounds ($8) to 20 pound notes is being surreptitiously deposited in unguarded pockets or open handbags in Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden and other busy spots.

The initiative, which runs until the end of August in London before being rolled out countrywide, is being funded by a broadbrand provider [TalkTalk - JdJ], which says it wants to brighten up people's lives in unusual ways.

Burglary Live On The Internet
Florida woman watches intruders rob home via surveillance feed

APRIL 9--A Florida woman who used a live Internet video feed to monitor the interior of her home was shocked yesterday when she saw two men burglarizing her residence in real time. Jeanne Thomas, 43, was seated at her office desk when two strangers appeared in her living room (the intruders got into Thomas's Boynton Beach house through a doggie door at the rear of the home, according to the below probable cause affidavit). Thomas, who set up the live video stream after her home was burglarized last October, immediately called 911 to report the burglary (click here to listen to her conversation with a police operator). Cops raced to her home and arrested the two men inside the house: Curtis Williams, 20, and Steven Morales, 19.

Chef Paula Deen loses her pants during festival demo

Superchef Mario Batali may have dropped a couple of f-bombs at a South Beach Wine & Food Festival dinner honoring the king and queen of Spain. But Paula Deen did him one better Sunday afternoon, unwittingly mooning the audience at her festival demo.

Where's Joaquin?

This first clip is Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman's Late Show earlier this month.

This second clip is Ben Stiller doing a hilarious goof on Joaquin at the Academy Awards presentation.

Weekend Watching VI

These two clips about the credit crisis are simplified -- naturally, or you'd be here the rest of the month. But they show the major points.

One thing not mentioned is that historically (for most of the 20th century), mortgages in the U.S. were handled by savings bankers and not by investment bankers. There were no phone calls from Main Street to Wall Street, as the video describes it. Investment bankers got involved with mortgages in the 70s and 80s when GNMA (followed by others) began to securitize mortgages to make MBS's. These mortgage-backed securities are a big topic in Michael Lewis' book Liar's Poker. (It's a good read, btw.)

MBS's were a way for bond brokers to trade a group of mortgages in much the same way they traded corporate and government bonds. MBS's became CMOs (CDOs, as the video calls them) when traders cut them up into tranches (a French word for slices).

It's an interesting cultural take that the prime borrowers appear as a couple with 1 child and a dog. But the sub-prime borrowers are shown as overweight smokers with 4 children. It's a wonder they didn't put horns on their heads and work an SUV in there somehow.

Chicago Tea Party

This is a great clip from CNBC but you'll need to follow the link to watch it (since offsite embedding's not available).

Santelli's Chicago Tea Party

CNBC's Rick Santelli and the traders on the floor of the CBOE express outrage over the notion they may have to pay their neighbor's mortgage, particularly if they bought far more house than they could actually afford, with Jason Roney, Sharmac Capital.

Update: Here's the video -
